Jalpí Castle is a stately estate located in Arenys de Munt, in the province of Barcelona.
The castle was owned by Don Augusto Borràs i Jalpí, heir to a family of landowners, and his wife, Doña Sofía de Algorta y Albaroa, a maid from Lequeitio who belonged to a wealthy family. Their son, Don Miguel, fell in love with a young woman whose family never accepted him, which was the beginning of the family’s social decline.
Various historians assert that the Sant Marçal or Cerdanyola Castle was built during the first third of the 11th century, when the existence of the Sant Marçal church was already documented. Unlike the church, however, the Castle was not clearly mentioned until the first half of the 12th century. Ramon Berenguer IV, Count of Barcelona, donated to his seneschal Ramon Guillem de Montcada various assets, including the Castle of Sant Marcial.
In 1225, the seneschal sold the castle to Ramon de Plegamans, whose son, Marimon de Plegamans, founded one of the most important families of the time, the Marimon family, whose descendants are the current owners of the castle.
The Torre Cellers castle was built above an old roman villa and restored in the 14th century. Years later, it was inhabited by the famous baron of Rocafort and two centuries later it started to be used as a farm. Many elements of its original construction remain and it has been recognised as the best-conserved castle in Catalonia.
