This castle began its construction in the 11th century, in the area that was used by the Romans, Visigoths and Celts as a settlement. Nothing more and nothing less!

In the 19th century it was losing its importance so much that it had to sell its stones to other buildings, but this only lasted until 1924, the year in which it began its reconstruction into what it is today.

What will amaze you the most about it is its Tribute Tower, with shields and coats of arms of those who once occupied it. It’s a castle where you will learn lots of history!

Batres Castle

The castle was built between the 15th and 16th centuries. It has been historically associated with the lords of Batres, who used it as a palatial residence. One of its most outstanding residents was the famous Toledo poet Garcilaso de la Vega (1501 or 1503-1536), who inherited the title of Lord of Batres from his mother, Sancha de Guzmán.

The property subsequently passed to the Counts of Oñate and then to the Marquises of Riscal. In the 1970s, it was acquired by the architect Luis Moreno de Cala y Torres, who proceeded to restore it and at the same time set up the Castillo de Batres School of Gardening and Landscaping within the grounds.

Santa Florentina Castle

The building was originally a Roman villa (domus) and fortification. It was built in the 11th century and its first documented owners were the feudal lords Guadimir de Canet and later Gilbert de Canet. The splendour of the building began in the 14th century, when Ferrera de Canet fortified the house and added medieval towers. In the 16th century it passed into the hands of Dimas Muntaner, whose family ran it until the change of ownership to the Capmani family, the current owners of the castle. In 1908 it was the residence of Alfonso XIII, who granted Ramon de Montaner y Vila the title of Count of Canet. In 1910 it was enlarged and renovated by the modernist architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

Today the castle serves as a venue for events (photo shoots, weddings…), it also works as a museum and has been the venue of an annual classical music festival since 1999 in July and August.

The castle was also the setting for the filming of Game of Thrones, representing Horn Hill, home of House Tarly, Samwell Tarly’s family.

It also appears in the 1995 film La tabla de Flandes, based on the novel of the same name by Arturo Pérez Reverte, which was first published in 1990.
