Going up to a rooftop and enjoying the sun is a great idea, not only because they are fashionable thanks to the New Yorkers, but also because these days outdoor places are the most sought after. It’s a great way to spend time with friends outside and also enjoy wonderful views. Here, we’ll tell you which are the most famous rooftops in the capital.
Palacio Cibeles (Plaza de la Cibeles, 1)
The Palacio de Cibeles, built in 1909 with its avant-garde design, is one of the most emblematic buildings in Madrid. On the sixth floor of the Palacio de Cibeles, the current seat of the Madrid City Council, is the Cibeles terrace where you can enjoy unbeatable views of the Plaza de Cibeles, Calle Alcalá, Paseo de Recoletos and Paseo del Prado, as well as the Madrid skyline.

In the middle of Gran Vía is this rooftop in the Aloft Madrid hotel. A quiet terrace just off Callao with incredible views of the Royal Palace and Madrid de los Austrias.
This terrace is ideal for relaxing and unwinding with one of its famous cocktails or a bite to eat from its renowned menu. It is open in the afternoon from Friday to Sunday and on public holidays.
Dani (Sevilla, 3)
Possibly one of the best terraces in Madrid, this one belongs to the recently opened Four Seasons luxury hotel, very close to Puerta del Sol – in other words, right in the centre of Madrid. It is open from noon to midnight and can be accessed from Calle Sevilla.
This terrace is not only famous for its views or location, but also because it has one of the most important Michelin-starred chefs in the country, Dani García. Here, he offers a huge variety of gastronomic goodies, with nods to his homeland for everyone.
These luxurious dishes can be accompanied by cocktails of the same calibre. The expert Luca Anastasio, a renowned mixologist, is in charge of this.
Picos Pardos Sky Lounge (Velázquez, 62)
This quiet and luxurious terrace is located in the Salamanca neighbourhood. You can enjoy a great gastronomic menu created by Martín Berasategui and a wide variety of cocktails while you relax on a bed or by the pool surrounded by exotic vegetation.
Ginkgo Restaurante & Sky Bar (Plaza de España, 3)
Arguably the best terrace to watch the sun set behind the Royal Palace, we’re talking about Ginkgo, which belongs to the hotel VP Plaza España Design, a rooftop spread over several spaces and covered by glass so you can go up at any time of the year. With Japanese and vintage inspiration, its 360º views and outdoor pool with a waterfall will make you want to spend the whole day there.
Open every day from noon to night, you can have lunch or dinner, as it has a menu that mixes Mediterranean and Asian food, but it’s recommended to book before you go.
Picalagartos Sky Bar (Gran Vía, 21)
This terrace, located in the heart of Gran Vía, is one of the rooftops with the best views of this emblematic street and has a modern, classicist style that will take you back to the 1950s.
This place offers, between the eighth and ninth floors of the hotel, various options, from a mid-morning brunch, a creative meal at the hands of chef Manuel Berganza, and even dinner after watching the sunset.
Rooftop of the Círculo de Bellas Artes (Marqués de Casa Riera, 2)
You might think this place is a bit clichéd, but the 360º views from 56 metres up are impressive, and it also has a plus point in this day and age: it’s one of the largest terraces in Madrid.
It’s open from brunch to dinner, and has a menu designed by the youngest Spanish chef to win a Michelin star, Manuel Berganza, executive chef of Azotea Grupo, and also the designer of Picalagartos’ rooftop menu.
The Hat Madrid (Imperial, 9)
Very close to the Plaza Mayor and on top of a 19th century mansion, you will find this less formal rooftop. The views from here may be different from the others, but they certainly have the same charm. It’s open all day but we recommend you go at sunset to see the rooftops of La Latina and the dome of the Colegiata de San Isidro at its best.
Here, you can enjoy everything from original starters to the sweetest desserts, all accompanied by a good cocktail, of course.
Rooftop NH Collection Casa Suecia (Marqués de Casa Riera, 4)
This terrace may be similar to the one at the Círculo de Bellas Artes, but this one is much less crowded. It has 360º views of Retiro and Cibeles and is on two levels. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a good cocktail, as this is their speciality. But that’s not all, you can also have brunch and when the weather is nice they have DJs to keep the night going!
Ático 11 (Gran Vía, 11)
Located in the Barrio de Las Letras, this terrace stands out for its decoration with plants, which allows you to unplug from everyday life. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a cocktail or a drink at sunset.
Doñaluz (Montera, 10)
This is one of the most popular terraces, as it combines good food, a fantastic selection of wines and cocktails with wonderful views of Puerta del Sol. It is located in the B&B Hotel Madrid Centro Puerta del Sol.
Aduana (Hermosilla, 2)
This restaurant has a special location, on the Plaza de Colón, on the seventh floor of the Hotel Fénix Gran Meliá. Its speciality is Mediterranean cuisine but with a unique touch.
Florida Retiro (Paseo República de Panamá, 1)
This terrace won’t surprise you with its views of the city or its height, but it certainly has a very special location. It is in the middle of El Retiro, so it is surrounded by trees and nature. It also stands out for its excellent drinks and cocktails.
Terraza The Principal (Marqués de Valdeiglesias, 1)
This is a modern terrace inside a classic hotel. It has sun loungers so you can sip a cocktail or a champagne while enjoying the views of Gran Vía and the Metrópolis building – definitely a classy experience!
El Viajero (Plaza de la Cebada, 11)
This rooftop is so famous that on weekends it’s hard to get there and get a table, but the wait is definitely worth it. Sipping one of their famous mojitos while gazing at the Royal Basilica of San Francisco el Grande is priceless.
