History

The stunning Cerralbo Museum sits in the heart of Madrid within a 19th century palatial town house – the former home of Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, 17th Marquis of Cerralbo. The interior decoration of the palace features Neo-Baroque and Rococo elements, with a display of works of art and exquisite objects.

The English landscape garden combines classic and romantic elements. It is arranged around a
central pond and features mythological sculptures and portrait busts of Roman emperors.

The Cerralbo Museum is a reference in Spanish collecting and preserves the essence of the time when don Enrique de Aguilera y Gamboa, seventeenth Marquis of Cerralbo (1845-1922), built the palace and made it his home and a space to keep his collections and host his intense social and political life.

The rooms, furnished according to the taste of the late 19th century, and the works of art it holds, reflect the lifestyle of the aristocracy from Madrid of the time, and the interest of don Enrique de Aguilera in getting one of the most valued private art collections of his time, which he left to the Spanish State in 1922.
