Halloween is approaching and with it the task of finding the perfect costume for our children. On Halloween it is inevitable that two children are disguised as the same and especially when they insist on dressing up as their favourite character from the most recent movie; But what we can do is make sure that our children’s costume doesn’t look like their friend’s at all. 1.     Apply a moisturiser.

It is important before starting to put makeup on children to have previously hydrated their skin. Therefore, the first step would be to apply a moisturiser or oil, such as almond oil, all over the face and neck. This will later help to remove the makeup better.

  1.     Buy water-based makeup.

Water-based makeup is paraben-free makeup, created to respect delicate skin; which makes it the most suitable option to paint children’s faces for a carnival or for Halloween. It is used in a similar way to watercolours, wet it and apply it with the help of a sponge or brush. In addition, there are many colours, offering a wide variety of possible looks.

  1.     Avoid glues.

First of all, we must avoid using glues or adhesive elements, such as false eyelashes, stickers or other decorative details; since these could be harmful to the skin and even dangerous. Perfect makeup can be achieved without using such accessories.

  1.     Remove make-up and cleanse the skin in depth.

As we well know from our own experience, especially women, it is essential to remove make-up and clean your face well before going to sleep. Well, with children we must do the same to avoid irritations. Once the party is over we will have to remove the makeup from their faces. The best option to do this is first by applying cleansing milk or a mild make-up remover cream, specific for sensitive skin, and removing the product with a cotton ball, without rubbing; and then washing the face with soap and water to finish removing the paint residue. Having used a water-based makeup, it will not be difficult to remove it.

  1.     Reapply a moisturiser.

Finally, once they have a clean face, it is advisable to apply a moisturiser again so that their skin does not dry out. And with this they will be ready to go to sleep after a fun day.

Now let’s start with some makeup ideas. You will see that it is not as complicated as it seems, nor does it take as much time as you thought to create scary looks for your children.

Just use a white base, paint a black circle around the eyes simulating the sockets, outline the tip of the nose and draw the corners of the lips with a horizontal line on each side and small vertical lines on them. Then we can add some details to turn our children into Coco or the Mexican Catrina.

You can be quite playful with this makeup, painting only half or the entire face; but generally an orange base is always used and the details of the eyes, nose and mouth are added in black with terrifying shapes.

Ghost

For this makeup you will need black paint to give the ghost shape we want on the children’s face, white paint for the base and green paint to highlight the eyes. We can also opt for something simpler such as painting the entire face in white, marking the details with black and green.

Vampire

This perhaps is the simplest, because we can apply a white base or just paint the details, such as the white fangs with blood and the thick black eyebrows. We can also draw a bat on them or paint some red around their eyes.

Devil

The easiest option would be to use a red base and paint the details of the eyebrows and beard in black.

Zombie

You can use a white base, mark the dark circles with black and draw scars with red.

Witch

There are many variants of witch makeup, but you can go for a green base, a purple eyeshadow and draw black details like cobwebs.

Frankenstein

For this character you need a green base and black to draw the mouth and other scars all over the face. Blank screws can also be drawn on both sides of the forehead.

Super Hero

This is an idea that children often love, who will want to look like their favourite superhero for one night. The makeup depends on the character, but for some it is enough to just paint a mask.

Corpse Bride

For a good characterisation of this character you should apply a blue base, a black eyeshadow, white paint under the eyes to make them appear larger, black to draw eyelashes and purple or pink for the lips.

This is a great way to have fun with your children. They love to have their faces painted, and you can even encourage them to paint it themselves and provide ideas on how to make their makeup a little more original. In this way, they will express their creativity and develop their imagination. At the end of the day it is not that different from painting on paper.
