You started your career in the world of sports photography, how did you make the switch to wedding photography and videography in the Basque Country? What do both worlds have in common?

My transition to wedding photography was natural. Although at first I specialized in sports photography, I discovered that the emotion and energy of sporting events were also present in weddings, but with a different emotional charge. Both worlds share the need to capture unique and unrepeatable moments, which requires anticipation, speed and creativity.

Your style is described as a combination of documentary and artistic photography. How do you manage to balance both approaches in your work?

My documentary approach allows me to capture the naturalness and spontaneous moments, while the artistic side adds an aesthetic touch and care to the compositions. The balance is achieved by getting to know the bride and groom and understanding what moments they want to remember and how they want to see them captured.

Working on weddings must be exciting, but also challenging. What has been the funniest or most curious moment you have experienced during a wedding?

Once, at an outdoor wedding, the bride and groom’s dog ran away just before the ceremony with the rings tied to his collar. Everyone joined in to chase after him, and although it was chaotic, it ended up being one of the most fun and memorable moments of the day.

We know you are passionate about capturing spontaneous moments. Have you ever had an unexpected photo become a favorite of the bride and groom?

Yes, once, after the ceremony, I captured a precious moment: the bride, with a beaming smile, was showing her young son her wedding ring. The excitement on her face and the curiosity in the child’s eyes created an image loaded with meaning and tenderness. It was a completely natural moment that was not planned, but ended up being very special for them. The bride and groom told me that this photo represented the connection between their new stage as a couple and their role as a family, and it became one of their favorites of the day.

Do you have a particular wedding or event that left a special impression on you, either for an emotional or creative reason?

A wedding in a small hermitage in the mountains left a big mark on me. It was intimate, with only a few guests, and the bride and groom were completely engaged in the moment. The emotions were so authentic that each photograph seemed to tell a profound story.

Your focus is very much on storytelling. How do you connect with the bride and groom to capture their most authentic emotions?

I spend time getting to know them before the wedding. I talk to them, listen to their stories and try to understand what makes them unique as a couple. That connection helps them feel comfortable and able to be themselves in front of the camera.

In terms of videography, what kind of cinematic videos do you prefer to create for weddings? Do you follow any specific style or approach?

I prefer to create videos that blend real moments with a cinematic narrative. I like to use emotional music, careful shots and editing that transports the bride and groom to their wedding day every time they watch it.

The Basque Country has spectacular landscapes, how do you incorporate the natural beauty of the region into your work? Do you have a favorite place to do wedding photography sessions there?

I always try to include the landscapes of the Basque Country because they add an incredible natural frame to the photos. Places like San Juan de Gaztelugatxe, the vineyards of La Rioja Alavesa or the cliffs of Zumaia are perfect for outdoor sessions.

We know that every couple has a unique story. How do you customize your work so that each wedding has its own special touch?

Every wedding is different because every couple is different. As a professional wedding photography and videography in the Basque Country I am inspired by their personalities, their story and the details they choose for their special day. This helps me to reflect their essence in an authentic way.

Wedding photography is also about capturing fleeting moments. Have you ever had to improvise to get the perfect shot?

Yes, more than once. Once, unexpected rain forced us to seek shelter in a nearby barn. Although it wasn’t planned, the photos in that dim light and rustic setting turned out magical.

Sometimes the bride and groom have special requests. What was the most original or funniest request you’ve been asked during a wedding?

One couple wanted to recreate a scene from their favorite movie with all the guests. It was a challenge to coordinate so many people, but the result was unique and a lot of fun.

If your wedding photography was a sport, what sport would it be and why?

It would be athletics, because you need endurance, speed and to be prepared to capture the exact moment without losing concentration. The same as a professional wedding photography and videography in the Basque Country.

Finally, Alex, is there any advice you usually give to couples before their wedding to help them feel more comfortable in front of the camera?

As a professional wedding photography and videography in the Basque Country, I always tell them to forget about the camera and focus on each other. I remind them that this day is theirs and that naturalness always results in the best photos. It also helps to do a session beforehand so they get used to being in front of the camera.
