Dressing for Your Destination Wedding

Your wedding gown should say a lot about you -- and your wedding's -- style. Here's what to consider as you ponder the options.

Don’t undermine the importance of fashion. Your wedding dress should say a lot about your personality and your wedding’s style. Does it match your type of event? Here’s what you should think about when considering your options.

Garden Destination Wedding

What to think about:

Consider your aisle. Will you have a runner? If you’d like to walk down a grass aisle, ensure you think about the length of your dress. Choose something that doesn’t drag on the floor (or alter it like so) so that you don’t end up with difficult green stains along the hemline. Also consider decorating your dress with the season’s key charms – floral embroideries and accessories such as brooches and hair pins.

What to avoid:

High heels. If you opt for a grass aisle, you’ll undoubtedly slip into the soil. You should also avoid shiny and glittery decorations as they could look misplaced in a natural setting.

Beach Destination Wedding

What to think about:

What to think about: If you’re planning a ceremony in the sun, you’ll want to consider light fabrics such as chiffon, silk and charmeuse. Also consider shapes that will work well with you to save you from overheating. Ensure that your fabrics are natural and breathable. You’ll definitely need to choose flats or sandals, unless you choose to create a firm path over the sand.

What to avoid:

If you have a sandy aisle, avoid dresses with heavy trains so as to not leave a carved path of sand as you walk down the aisle.

City Destination Wedding

What to think about:

What to think about: Everything is possible when it comes to a chic city wedding, from princess ball gowns to sleek svelte sheaths to short, sassy mini-dresses. However, you must consider your particular city venue when making your decision: you may want to go for something more extravagant for a big hotel affair, or more modern or fashionable for a clean-lined loft wedding.

What to avoid:

Nothing is forbidden! However, if you’re going to take a cab to and from your venue, just remember to ensure that your dress will fit inside it.

Cold-Weather Destination Wedding

What to think about:

What to think about: Even if you’re travelling directly from a heated limo to your venue, you’ll most likely get cold if you don’t have something to properly cover you up. Your actual dress itself can still be strapless and show plenty of skin, but you should certainly choose a beautiful cover up to have over your shoulders. Search for a fashionable cover-up, a lace jacket, or a cashmere pashmina. Many designers are happy to create them so that they match your dress.

What to avoid:

Anything without a proper lining. Don’t miss out the undergarments (if you’re cold, all of your guests will know it). Also, steer away from light materials like linen or crepe, and opt for heavier ones like more (a heavy silk taffeta), brocade, or velvets.

Castle Destination Wedding

What to think about:

What to think about: There aren’t many settings more grand than this, so make sure your gown matches this level of affluence to achieve a good impact. Go to town with a ball gown, a full A-line, or a chapel-length train.

What to avoid:

You should considering avoiding shoes that will make an annoyingly loud sound as you walk down the aisle or a stone floor, or just lay down a carpet to avoid this noise.
