How much is the catering for the wedding in 2023? And... How much money do I have to give if I'm invited?

The days of gifts to the bride and groom flooding their home with crockery, sets of bed linen and household appliances, as well as endless wedding lists, are long gone. Nowadays, brides and grooms prefer their guests to give them money rather than other items as wedding gifts on their big day. This means that the bride and groom can afford, at the very least, the cost of the catering for the weddings of 2023.

In the middle of the wedding season, we want to clear up any doubts you may have about how much money to give when you are invited to a wedding, so that you do not fall short, but neither do you give an excessive amount that you can hardly afford or that would be a sacrifice.

Therefore, the ideal is to specify a figure that is within the possibilities of each one of you, but of course: taking into account the cost of the catering for weddings in 2023.

We won’t keep you waiting any longer!

How much does the 2023 wedding catering cost?

The average cost of catering for weddings in 2023 is between €75 and €150 and the open bar is usually paid additionally. So, if these figures are taken into consideration, each guest would have to give around €150/160, if you only want to cover the cost of the menu.

But, if you want to leave something extra for the bride and groom… follow these guidelines!

If you are a friend or distant relative

The ideal amount to give to the couple getting married if you are a friend or distant relative of one of the couple you can give between 100 and 200 euros per person. This amount also fits for work colleagues.

If you are a close friend or relative

If one of the members of the couple is one of your closest friends, with whom you have shared many stories and moments, or if you have been friends for a long time, he/she deserves a very special gift. Therefore, the most appropriate amount would be between 200 and 300 euros per person.

If you are a brother, sister or close friend

If the relationship is even closer, such as that of a sibling or close friend, the ideal amount for a gift could be between 300 and 500 euros per person. A more than adequate amount also if you are one of the wedding witnesses, bridesmaids or best men.

If you are a parent or close uncle

In this case the starting price would be 500 euros per person and the maximum is decided by each person. However, you also have to take into account how much you have participated in the wedding, if you have helped them to cover part of the expenses, as decorations for the aisle or if you have already given you a very special gift, such as the wedding dress or groom’s suit.

What if I can’t attend the wedding, do I also have to make a gift?

Not going to the wedding will help your wallet, but you still have to give something for the couple. The protocol says that we must pay, at least, the price of the catering for the 2023 weddings (approximately 150 euros) and, if possible, raise the gift a little so that the bride and groom have something left for the beginning of their new life together.

Always at least cover the cost of the menu

The most common guideline for friends and family giving money is, as a minimum, to be able to cover the cost of the 2023 wedding catering that the couple has chosen for the big celebration.

Therefore, having an idea of how much the catering or banquet has cost is essential in order to be able to calculate approximately how much money needs to be handed over.

To know this, the ideal thing to do is to know the place where the banquet is going to be held and without having to do too much research, find out the approximate prices: for example, on the websites of the venues or caterers, the minimum prices of their menus can be found to get an idea and cover the cost of the catering.

How to give money in an original way for a wedding?

As we have already mentioned, cash (usually given on the day of the wedding in an envelope) and bank transfers are the two most common methods of giving money to couples who are getting married. But they are not the only ones. And they are certainly not the most original.

Do you want to know more original ways of giving money at a wedding? Well, think about cardboard boxes with newspaper clippings and crumpled banknotes, treasure chests full of coins, balloons with banknotes inside that the couple will have to prick to find? It will be a fun time for everyone!
