How to adapt lighting to the client’s personality and style so that it reflects their essence?
Listening. You have to listen, ask, and have the client tell you their tastes, preferences, what they want and what they don’t want. And only then make suggestions and explain them very well, to make sure that we are on the same page and achieve the surprising lighting for events that they are looking for.
What is the most impressive event you have illuminated and what made it so special?
All events have their magic because they are the result of the enthusiasm and effort of the clients and many more people. If I had to remember one, it would be the wedding banquet held in the Church of San Juan, in Paredes de Nava, Palencia, because it is a church in “consolidated ruin”, that is, the original construction is partially preserved and an architectural intervention has been carried out to prevent further deterioration, allowing safe use. The central part of the vault no longer exists, but the walls, the tower and a side gallery do remain. So the combination of Gothic arches and the open sky allowed us to achieve surprising lighting for events, enhancing their spectacularity.
What emotions do you seek to provoke in guests when they enter a space illuminated by Ilusión Iluminación?
Whatever the client has asked us for. We always ask our clients: what atmosphere, what effect do you want to achieve? Something bright, shiny, festive? Something more intimate, suggestive, soft? Something magical, ethereal?
If someone tells you they want crazy, amazing lighting for events, what ideas come to mind?
A light show, to the rhythm of the music chosen by the client, programmed with the software and equipment we use in concerts and musical events, with lots of colour and movement, something personalised and unique, which in a few minutes creates an impact that you will remember for the rest of your life.
Do you have any funny anecdotes or unexpected events related to lighting that have occurred during an event?
Whenever possible, we set up the event the day before to avoid unforeseen events and to ensure that everything goes perfectly. But sometimes it is not possible. On one occasion, at an event where it was not possible to set up in advance and we only had a few hours before the start, there was a tremendous downpour. Despite being covered, the space was full of leaks. We had to set up the event in an adjoining space, in half the time, and even so, it went perfectly and nobody noticed anything.
What trends in amazing lighting for events are you seeing gaining popularity at events right now?
In general, everything that means customization, that the lighting is specific to your event and is different. Light shows to the rhythm of music and video mapping applied to interior spaces are a clear trend in surprising lighting for events.
If you could light up any iconic landmark in the world for a special event, which one would you choose and what style of lighting would you use?
There is no special place, they are all special, because light changes everything. You can transform the most ordinary and uninteresting place into a fascinating place with the right light. In general, I prefer it to be a new and unknown place for me. That sense of discovery and changing a place thanks to light is what attracts me.
What tips would you give to someone planning an event and wanting to make sure they have amazing lighting for events?
Combine adequately explaining and telling what you want very well with seeking advice from professionals who have been working for a long time and will know how to guide and materialize those ideas.
