Three days full of ceremonies, rituals and traditions
A Hindu wedding is a symbol of the union between families through a kind of ritual. The Brahmin, who is the member of the priestly caste, is the one who has to give his approval before the wedding, and he also chooses the date and time of the wedding.
These weddings are usually a big celebration that lasts several days, generally three. Here we tell you what each day consists of!
First day
The groom comes to meet his future bride in her house, where the brides’s family welcomes him as one of the family. Before that, the women of both the bride’s and groom’s families get together to prepare the bride for the Sangeet party and make her beautiful and gorgeous for the groom’s visit. It involves painting her with henna, called Mehndi.
After this welcome, all the men are received during the evening, where they will dance and play charades games.
Second day
A private ceremony is held on this day, with both families separately. Here a ritual is performed for the bride, where she is smeared with turmeric, as a symbol of good luck and fertility. The older men present her with bracelets and gold.
Third day
This is the day of the wedding ceremony. The groom rides a horse and, together with his family, he takes the bride and goes to the place where their marriage will be officially consummated. The bride and groom enter into marriage by presenting each other with a sacred consent, called a samskara.
When they first meet at the altar, they exchange a wreath and amulets. The groom ties a necklace of flowers to the bride, and the bride spills red powder on the groom’s hair.
During the ceremony, the bride and groom are given life instructions through three rituals: homa, panigrahena and satapadi. Homa is an offering to the fire, panigrahena signifies the union between the bride and groom, and satapadi involves the bride and groom circling the sacred fire seven times.
This is followed by the recitation of mantras and sacred texts, and after the marriage is concluded, handfuls of rice are thrown as a symbol of prosperity.
After the wedding, the bride goes to the groom’s house, which becomes their new home. After a few days, they begin their honeymoon.
