Carry out community work on your trip to Spain!

Travelling and helping, what could be better than that for your holiday? This is the perfect mix to turn these days of relaxation into an enriching experience on a personal and professional level. It would enable you to immerse yourself in the culture of the country, get to know the local people and help them with whatever they need, in a constantly sustainable way. This is known as a volunteering trip or voluntourism.

To turn your trip into a community project, you don’t need to go to the other side of the world, because, in countries such as Spain, this is also a necessary practice. Spain has miles of coastlines and beaches, native species, etc.

But, how do we take part?

Well there are many personal advantages to a trip of this nature, such as for example the development of values, empathy and tolerance, as well as the chance to participate in responsible tourism which protects the environment and the native population whilst you enjoy a unique experience in a different place with new cultures and traditions.

Which is the right volunteering activity for me?

Among all of the volunteering activities that you can find in Spain, the conservation of the coasts of the Canary Islands, specifically in La Graciosa in Lanzarote, would be a perfect choice. This would be a wonderful holiday in which you would be able to keep the beaches clean and get rid of the plastic that fills the sea, as well as even save an endangered animal.

It is also very common to work on the conservation of sea birds in the Atlantic Ocean or the conservation of species in order to improve their habitats in locations such as Segovia, Toledo, Jaén or Ciudad Real. These are areas that face significant issues with the conservation of their birds of prey, rabbits, otters, vultures or lynxes, among others.

Even small children could take part in one of these projects in different camps across Spain, where they can learn how to conserve the natural world whilst spending plenty of time in the outdoors at workshops and excursions. But if you are a sports lover, it would be extremely rewarding to take part in a volunteer programme that works with those who suffer from any type of disability, helping them to integrate into society through playing sport.

There are also many social projects in cities such as Valencia or Salamanca that allow you to work with people who are homeless, experiencing poverty or social exclusion, facilitating the rehabilitation process and their reinsertion into society.

It is however important to recognise before you sign up to one of these projects that this will not be a relaxing holiday, but a trip that will require physical effort, engagement and dedication. It is also necessary to note that the work that you do will not be paid, but equally you will have an incredible experience with great personal satisfaction, as well as the opportunity to learn about the conservation of nature. You will also get the chance to gain knowledge from people who have the same hobbies and interests as you.
