Ekaterina Gasanova, wedding photographer in BarcelonaWhat was the most unexpected or funniest moment you had to photograph at a wedding?

One of the funniest weddings was a Chinese wedding where the guests themselves prepared a surprise flashmob – the bride and groom didn’t know about it, but the grandmother and grandfather did! It was magical to see how the whole family, from different generations, came together to surprise and celebrate the bride and groom.

They say love has no language, but you speak four! Any funny anecdotes with international couples?

Of course! At several weddings I have had to translate or improvise with my international couples. Once I translated vows from Russian into Spanish in the middle of the ceremony, improvising on the fly, and we all ended up laughing together. The magic of languages and emotions!

Wedding photographer in Barcelona, but also artist, accomplice and, as they say, almost psychologist on the wedding day. What is the ‘superpower’ you use the most when everything gets a little out of control?

Empathy, speed of adaptation and improvisation. Added to my natural charisma – I know how to relax couples, adapt to any unforeseen events and get the energy flowing again. I feel like a fish in water at weddings!

If a very shy couple says to you, “we don’t want to pose, we hate cameras!”. What do you tell them so they relax and end up enjoying the session?

It’s the most normal thing to do! 99% of my couples don’t want to pose. I always help them to relax, to forget that there is a camera and to enjoy every look. I remind them that for me, at that moment, the bride is the most beautiful woman and that I am there to tell her story with love and respect.

What is it that you capture with your lens that others don’t see? Where is the magic for you?

The magic is in the waiting and intuition. I love to observe, anticipate and capture the right moment – I don’t shoot randomly, I wait and let the scene reveal itself. It’s all about practice, instinct and real connection with emotions.

You’ve worked all over Spain and beyond – which destination has been your favorite to photograph a wedding and which would be your dream one?

Yes, besides being a wedding photographer in Barcelona, I have also photographed weddings in France, Andorra and all over Spain, beautiful places! My dream destination is Iceland, Ireland or Italy – I love the wild and poetic landscapes they have.

Let’s talk about your equipment! What’s it like working with a videographer, drone and the whole show? Has a drone ever played a trick on you?

Yes, and what stories we have! Once, at a snow wedding, a blizzard started when we launched the drone and we had to improvise to get everything right. Another time, at a wedding at sea, the drone had to land on the small deck of a yacht…. Pure adrenaline moments!

What is your favorite part of the process: the shoot, the editing, the delivery… And how do couples react when they see their photos for the first time?

I love the moment of the session: when everything comes to life and you feel the excitement. But I also really enjoy the delivery, when couples see their photos for the first time: there is always laughter, tears, hugs… and then, when I read their comments, I feel that everything makes sense.

What detail is never missing in one of your deliveries that makes everything very “Ekaterina Gasanova”?

Everything is delivered with love. Each couple receives a personalized USB in elegant packaging, 10-12 printed photos so they can see how the image feels on paper and on screen, and an online gallery to share with their loved ones. Because I believe that memories deserve a format that is as unique as their story.
