La Vila d’Argençola

History

La Vila d’Argençola is an agricultural estate with a Mediterranean forest, which has a large stately home, the result of consecutive extensions since its original construction, estimated to of been at the end of the 10thcentury. The further, and most important extensions were carried out in the 18th and 20th centuries. 

The main house, renovated at the beginning of the 20th century, is a modernist country house full of history, with stained glass windows from Catalan workshops, peculiar German stained-glass windows, balconies and large windows with arches of various shapes and other modernist ornaments on the roofs. All the openings on the ground floor are arched and outlined in solid, reddish-painted brick. Crowning all this volume is a large, 300 metre-squared terrace with a varying width on the first floor, which offers brilliant southern exposure. 

The layout of the original 18th-century basements is perfect for wine storage and ageing, which is why the galleries contain wine-cellars, vats and storage. 

Surrounding the main house are buildings of varying sizes, including the impressive old farmyard, as well as the small rural school, the terraces of the vegetable garden, the spring-water huts which supply drinking water to the house, the garden surrounding the cemetery, etc. Another feature to highlight is the parish church of Santa Eulalia, located on the site of a Romanesque chapel. 

The grounds, located in the shelter of the farmhouse and the church, offers retreat amongst the large riverbank groves, staggered reservoirs and the natural landscape that is both tranquil and spectacular at the same time.

Furthermore, the villa is located in the heart of the “UNESCO World Geopark of Central Catalonia”. The sea has existed here for more than forty million years, giving a distinctive character to the landscape, having provided grey stone to the construction of agricultural structures for centuries.
